Abstract

581,939. Aerials. STEVENS, A. H. (Lear Avia, Inc.). April 11, 1944, No. 6648. [Class 40 (v)] [Also in Group XXXVI] A loop antenna mounting comprising a streamlined shell of insulating material has its outer surface substantially covered with spaced strips of conducting material conforming with streamline flow past the shell, for the purpose of electrostatic screening. The loop antenna 15 is rotatably mounted inside the streamlined shell 10 which is mounted upon a base 11 with the interposition of a rubber gasket 36 and is constructed as described in Specification 580,568. The loop is driven by a motor 23 through gearing 25 and shaft 22 and a position transmitter 28 is provided. Connection to the rotating loop from leads 18 is made via contacts 45 and slip rings 43, 44, Figs. 4, 5 and 6 (not shown), formed by plating on annular projections on the insulating block 40 on which the loop is mounted. Electrically conducting strips 32 which may be of metal foil pasted on the shell or be formed by plating, are arranged over the surface of the shell 10 of insulating material. The strips are separated by spaces 33 and are longitudinally discontinuous to minimise eddy currents and are arranged to conform with the streamline flow past the shell so that wind currents, when the antenna is mounted on an aircraft in flight, exert pressure on the strips and assist them to hold firmly in their position. A strip 35 connects all strips 32 together and to earth potential. Specification 550,131, [Group XXXV], also is referred to.
