Abstract

581,801. Automatic control systems for de-magnetizing ships. YOUNG, G. R. Nov. 28, 1940, No. 17021. Convention date, Nov. 29, 1939. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXIII] In apparatus for de-magnetizing iron ships comprising a strip B of copper which is wound one or more times around the hull A of the ship, and through which is passed an electric current which produces a magnetic flux in the opposite direction to that due to the natural magnetism, means are provided whereby the direction and strength of the current in the strip is automatically controlled so as to neutralize variable natural magnetism. In the form shown, the turns of the winding are wound around the hull transversely to its length, and are spaced at intervals, to co-operate with a magnetic relay V at one end of the ship, but the winding may be arranged longitudinally, or partly diagonally and partly longitudinally, to co-operate with a magnetic relay at the top or bottom of the ship. The apparatus includes a direct-current reversible generator E with commutator brushes C, D which is reversed by a reversible motor through gearing G, relays I, J connected to a battery K, and power supply leads M, N for the reversible motor. The relay V comprises a soft iron base R with polepieces R<1>, R<2> and a permanently magnetized pivoted needle S with a contact T, adjustable by a spring S<2>, which is movable between contacts L, L<1>. Should there be north or south magnetism in the ship, the iron base R will move the needle S against contact L<1> or L, and one of the relay coils I<1>, J<1> will be energized to attract an armature P on an insulated block O. The corresponding contacts M<2>, N<2> are brought into contact with the corresponding contacts M<1>, N', the reversible motor is started, the brushes C, D are moved in a clockwise or anticlockwise direction around the generator E, and current of the required direction and strength is passed through the strip B.
