Abstract

690,232. Electromagnets. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and FRIEDLANDER, E. S. June 15, 1951 [June 15, 1950], No. 14982/50. Class 35. [Also in Groups XXXVI and XXXVII] A torque producing device which may be used as a relay or indicating instrument, comprises a two-pole armature 16 overlapping with two pairs of poles 12, 13 and 14, 15, a main winding 30 for producing a main flux round the core 10, 11, and pole windings on one pole of each pair for varying the flux distribution and so turning the armature. A third winding is also provided which may be either on the poles, as shown, and carry the same current as the main coil, or be on the core and carry the pole winding current. The third winding opposes the winding adjacent to which it is wound, i.e. the pole-winding or the main winding respectively. In the form shown, the rotor is restrained by a spring 18 and carries a contact 20 for engagement with fixed contacts 21, 21 for use as a relay. The pole windings 31, 32 are energized with A.C. from a current transformer on one phase of a threephase supply, while the main winding 30 in series with coils 33, 34 are connected between the other two phases. It is shown that with this connection the device responds to the conductance of the circuit and it is stated that it would respond to susceptance if a 90 degree displacement was introduced between the energization of the current responsive winding and the voltage responsive winding. In the modified arrangement of coils the third winding is not placed on the poles but is on the core with the main coil 30 and is energized from a current transformer in series with the pole windings, the main winding 30 being energized between two lines as before. When this arrangement is applied to a single phase line the device is responsive to circuit reactance, while on a three-phase circuit it is responsive to resistance.
