Abstract
581,286. Pocket igniters. CAMM, F. J. Aug. 22, 1944, No. 15991. [Class 75 (iii)] A pyrophoric lighter has a flint magazine 8 contained in a casing 7. Fig. 4 shows a section through the magazine, which has pockets, each adapted to hold a single flint 6 The upper edge of the barrel has a projecting flange 10, and the flints are fed into the barrel through an orifice closed by a plug, 11 The wick projects through a hole 26 in the nipple 23, the hole being helically undulated so that on gripping the end of the wick and rotating the projecting flange 24, the wick is raised or lowered. The mechanism for guarding and rotating the wheel comprises an arm 27, carrying a wick-protecting block 28, and attached to a housing 29 which protects the wheel. The arm 33 engages studs in the housing and carries a plunger 35. When the plunger is depressed, the arms take up the positions, dotted in Fig. 1, and a pawl 32 causes the wheel to rotate, and so light the wick in the usual manner. To place a new flint in position the spring 13 is released by unscrewing the head 17, and the piston 12 drops clear of the magazine. The barrel 8 is rotated by the flange 10 till a new flint comes over the orifice, and then the spring is recompressed to force the flint against the wheel. There are modifications in which the magazine has a horizontal axis or in which the flints are arranged horizontally above each other and fed by a spring to an abrasive wheel on a vertical axis. The Provisional Specification states that a foraminous cage may contain the wick in the receptacle.
