Abstract

599,062. Frictional igniters. NEUSTADTL, K. Nov. 16, 1945, No. 30759. [Class 75 (iii)] . In a lighter having a liquid fuel reservoir 10 and a container 11 for a wick and wadding, valve means 15 is provided to allow the reservoir 10 to be put in communication with the container 11 by externally disposed means 171 associated with a diaphragm 21 to keep the reservoir 10 liquid-tight. The container 11, Fig. 1, may screw into the reservoir 10 and be provided with a conical seating and a washer 14 to receive the valve '15 normally held by a plate-spring 16. This valve is adapted to be opened by depression of the end 171 of a spring-loaded rod 17 in a bush 18, which screws into a plug 19 closing the filling aperture of the lighter, the lighter being then inverted to allow fuel to pass through a groove in the valve to the container 11. The container 11 may comprise a lower portion llb and a cover lid held to it by the engagement of projections 11e in a depression 11 f, and wire gauze 11h may be provided to prevent the wadding from fouling the valve. The container may have an arm 111n, Fig. 7, to enable it to be detached, as for lighting a pipe, and in this case the container is preferably mounted on. a nipple 25 on the reservoir. This nipple 25 may have a projection 25b with an inclined upper face adapted to hold a flap valve 27 open against the action of a spring 28 when the container is in position, so that fuel may be admitted from the reservoir when the valve 15 is operated as before. When, however, the container is detached by its arm 111n, the flap valve 27 will close to prevent loss of fuel by evaporation.
