Abstract

A catalyst for the Fischer-Tropsch process produced by the reduction of a metal carbonate precipitated by means of an alkali carbonate is reduced at least partly in the presence of residual alkali, and the alkali is completely removed after or during the reduction. A volatile alkali may be used, which is removed during the reduction. Non-volatile alkali, if used, is removed by washing and preferably boiling with water until the washings have a pH value of seven. Used catalysts which contain residual alkali may be restored by a similar washing treatment. The reduction is preferably carried out in the presence of a previously reduced similar catalyst. In addition to nickel or cobalt, the catalyst may contain thorium dioxide and a small proportion of cerium oxide.
