Abstract
329,396. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Feb. 22, 1929. Diolefines are obtained by treating 1 :3-butylene glycols together with water vapour with a catalyst comprising an oxide of a metal or non-metal having a dehydrating action or a borate of such oxides. Instead of oxides compounds such as hydroxides, carbonates, nitrates, or oxalates, which furnish an oxide under working conditions may be used. Suitable oxides are alumina, silica, and thoria. Activating additions may be made to the catalyst such as copper sulphate or red phosphorus. In an example butadiene is obtained by passing butylene glycol over a catalyst prepared by soaking pumice with thorium nitrate and heating. The yield may be increased by an addition of water vapour.
