Abstract
316,158. Dreyfus, H. March 24, 1928. #-Hydroxy aliphatic monocarboxylic acids are prepared by the catalytic hydrogenation of monoesters or monoester salts of aliphatic dicarboxylic acids. According to the conditions, the acids may be obtained as such, as salts, or as esters. The substance to be hydrogenated may be dissolved in or mixed with an inert diluent, and the hydrogenation may be effected with gases containing hydrogen, such as water gas. In one example, an aqueous solution of potassium ethyl oxalate is treated with hydrogen at ordinary temperature under 100-150 atmospheres pressure in the presence of a nickel catalyst, potassium glycollate being obtained, and in another example the initial material is. monoethyl oxalate and the reduction is effected at 80-100‹ C. Reference is made also to the reduction of monoalkyl esters of malonic and succinic acids.
