[Class 83 (iii)] A work-holder comprises a supporting body having one or more sockets each containing a collet in the form of a longitudinally slit cylinder adapted to be closed on to the work by a plunger having at one end, faces inclined to each other and to the longitudinal axis of the plunger which contract the arms of the collet. A body A has a row of sockets 10, each with a lower inwardly projecting flange which supports the collet B in the form of a hollow cylinder slit longitudinally and held in position by a split spring ring 23. The ends or arms 18, 19 of the cylinder are contracted on to the work by inclined faces 26, 27, at one end of a plunger D operated by fluid pressure from a pipe or channel 33 common to chambers 38 at the rear of each plunger. The collet arms are made more resilient by longitudinal slots 20, 21 which also co-operate with pins 22 to prevent rotation of the collet. A longitudinal slot 29 and transverse slots 30, 31 give resiliency tothe plunger face pieces. As shown in Fig. 8, the work C has an annular shoulder which rests on the upper edge of the collet. Alternatively, as shown in Fig. 13, the lower ends of the work pieces may be supported on a common lintel bar 52. Fluid pressure is supplied to the common channel 33 from a reservoir by means of a hand or motor driven pump under the control of a relief valve. A hand-operated valve is provided for releasing the pressure on the plungers.
