Abstract

A stone, from which a mild and finely-divided scouring-powder such as flint, pumice, quartz sand, or calcined kyanite is readily released at the contact surfaces between the commutator and brushes of electric machines to bed the parts without any substantial abrasion of the metal either during or after detachment, is formed by bonding the powder with a relatively small amount, e.g., five per cent., of a thermosetting synthetic resin or with a thermoplastic material which will not soften or melt during use. The powder is mixed with a solution of the binder, the solvent is completely or partially removed, the mass is finely pulverized, pressed to shape, and heated to about 200 DEG C. to remove any residual solvent and, if necessary, to harden the binder.
