Abstract

580,477. Combined sparking plug and fuel injector. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. May 18, 1945, No. 12513. Convention date, May 27, 1944. [Classes 7 (iii) and 7 (iv) ] In a sparking plug the central electrode 26 incorporates a fluid actuated fuel-injection valve 40, the fuel passing to the valve via channels between the insulation assembly and the casing.C-sectioned springs 70 maintain the insulation assembly, which consists of overlapping parts 48 and 18, sealed against gaskets 24 and 50, the central electrode 26 being seated against a gasket 31. The upper part 48 contains a composite electrode in its narrowed bore in contact with the ignition lead and central electrode through weak springs 57, 64, preferably of beryllium - copperaloy. A collar 82, seated on a conical seat 78, has an annular passage 84 for the supply of fuel which passes through a slotted gasket 80, down channel 88 and fills the whole space below gaskets 50 and above gaskets 31 and 24. The fuel then passes to the valve 40, which is fluted, through slotted washers 72. The upper and lower portions 14 and 12 of the plug casing containing the assembled parts are forced together and soldered at 16. In a modification the casing is in three parts which are soldered together, and the space between the central electrode and lower insulation shell is omitted.
