Abstract
643,900. Regulating. JONSSON, G. E. V. Dec. 12, 1947, No. 32878. Convention date, April 7, 1943. [Classes 7(iii) and 7(vi)] To prevent knocking, fuel is injected during the first part of the compression stroke into a pre-combustion chamber 1 Fig. 2 to form a very rich mixture, which becomes diluted with air forced from the cylinder 3 through an opening 2 whose size is such that the mixture in chamber 1 only becomes ignitible slightly before operation of a spark plug 5, the timing of which is adjusted by the means controlling the fuel supply so that ignition occurs earlier in the cycle as the fuel supply is reduced. A chamber 6, in which final combustion of the mixture forced from the chamber 1 after ignition takes place, may be formed either in the piston or the cylinder head. In a modification, Fig. 3, the chamber 1 is divided into two chambers 1a, 1b, containing respectively the injector 4 and sparking plug 5 and communicating with one another through an orifice 7 and with the cylinder 3 through orifices 2a, 2b, of which 2a is larger than 2b so that on compression the pressure in chamber 1b is less than that in 1a. Rich mixture therefore passes through the orifice 7 to be diluted in 1b and ignited by the spark plug 5. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states that gaseous fuel such as methane may be used, and an inert gas or air may be injected with liquid fuel. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
