[Class 118 (ii)] [Also in Group XX] Apparatus for producing flashes of light by means of a high-pressure'metal vapour electric discharge lamp as described in Specification 508,241, [Group XXj, is associated with a shutter or like means for obscuring the lamp when it is in a state of minimum brightness and for exposing it when emitting maximum light. When the apparatus is used for signaling, the shutter is operated preferably by a relay whose primary contacts are moved by the key that controls the intensity of the emitted light. If the apparatus is used for projecting a kinematograph film, the shutter is that usually provided in projectors and it operates contacts which may be those of a relay.
