[Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XX] Switching control.-An apparatus for producing flashes of light for signalling or other purposes comprises a high brightness, high pressure metal vapour lamp which may be connected, through one of three circuit elements, to the supply, to give three degrees of light output for the markings, spaces and normal running. When operated from A.C. mains the circuit elements may conveniently comprise a choke provided with two tappings, a switch shorting the portion remote from the lamp when it is not being used for signalling and a signalling key shorting the portion between the other tap and the end of the choke remote from the lamp when the first switch is opened to allow signalling. The key may be operated by a relay including a grid-controlled discharge device. The lamp may be used in a kinematographic projection system, the shutter being dispensed with and the film illuminated intermittently by a switch corresponding to the signalling key. The lamp may be of the type described in Specifications 472,658 or 485,489, [both in Group XL].
