Abstract

579,139. Ceramic pigments. TRIGGS, W. W. (Harshaw Chemical Co.). April 24, 1944, No. 7589. Drawings to Specification. [Classes 1 (ii) and 1 (iii) ] In the production of a ceramic pigment in the form of a discrete, calcined, xerogel of the empirical formula Fe2O3.xSio2, where x is of such value that the Fe2O3 does not exceed 15 per cent. of the combined weights of Fe2O3 and SiO2, a water soluble inorganic ferric salt, an alkali silicate and an inorganic acid are brought together in an aqueous medium to form, on standing, the desired gel, which is then dried at a temperature not exceeding 250‹C., to give a xerogel, washed with water and calcined. preferably in an oxidising atmosphere, for a period of 1 to 3 hours at 800‹-1400‹C. The calcined material is finally ground so that the particle size is between the 200 and 400 mesh sieve. The quantities of ferric salt and alkali silicate are chosen to give the desired composition in the final product, the proportion of acid to give a pH value of desired gel above that produced by hydrolysis of the ferric salt, and the amount of water selected to give, for example, a weight of reaction mixture 15 or 16 times that of the combined Fe2O3 and SiO, content thereof, in the case of the 15 per cent. Fe2O3 pigment. Examples are given.
