Abstract

579,016. Bearings. IBBOTSON BROS. & CO., Ltd., and HARTLEY, S. June 17, 1944, No. 11584. [Class 12 (i)] [Also in Group XXXII] In a spring buffer of the type in which the buffer head 12, Fig. 1, is carried by a spring- pressed metallic plunger 11 slidable in an outer metallic casing 10, binding together of the metallic surfaces through corrosion or friction is prevented by the provision between the plunger and casing of at least one hard synthetic resin sleeve 16 which acts as a bearing between the sliding parts. The sleeve preferably consists of a laminated cotton fabric bonded with a synthetic resin of the phenol-formaldehyde type and heathardened, a suitable material being that known under the Registered Trade Mark " Texolex." As shown in Fig. 1, the sleeve is fitted on the reduced end 15 of the plunger between a metal stop ring 17 and an end ring 18 screwed on the plunger, withdrawal of which from the casing is prevented by a lip or abutment 20. The sleeve and ring 17 may be in two or more parts assembled in a groove cut on the periphery of the plunger and the abutment 20 may be provided by a flanged ring screwed on the mouth of the casing. In another construction, Fig. 3, the sleeve 16 is fitted in a 'groove 25 in the casing. A lip 20 of a rib 27 serves as an abutment for a ring 28 fitted in a groove 29 in the plunger. In a further construction, the sleeve 16 floats between the casing and plunger. 'In all constructions, there may be more than one sleeve fitted.
