578,943. Turning. HERBERT, Ltd., A., and LLOYD, A. H. Sept. 7, 1944, No. 17102. [Class 83 (iii)] A method of cutting-off a workpiece in a lathe or like machine tool consists in arranging a cutting-off tool 14 at the back of a crossslide 12, the tool being disposed to operate when the work is rotated in a direction 19 reverse to that used for normal turning by the tools 18. The tool 14 may be tipped with a hard alloy and be arranged as shown with negative rake, and a supplementary tool 23 may be used in conjunction, therewith, to cut a step on the next piece of stock to be operated upon.
