Abstract
752,071. Copy-milling; turret lathes; chucks. SILENTBLOC, Ltd. March 3, 1954 [March 13, 1953], No. 7063/53. Class 83 (3). [Also in Group XXIII] A tool for milling or grinding a groove or curved surface on a workpiece comprises means B<SP>6</SP> for oscillating a head B, B<SP>1</SP>, B<SP>2</SP> about its axis and means G<SP>1</SP>, E within the head for rotating a tool H<SP>1</SP> or its holder, the tool being mounted in the head to project into a recess B<SP>5</SP> and the axis of the tool intersecting that of the head. In an automatic turret lathe, two milling-cutters H<SP>1</SP>, having conical shanks H<SP>2</SP> secured in the gears E by screws H<SP>3</SP>, are mounted on the turret. The head is oscillated by gearing B<SP>6</SP>, K<SP>2</SP>, D<SP>3</SP>, K4 against the restraining force of a clock-spring J. As the turret is advanced, to cut, say, helical faces on a cam M<SP>3</SP>, Fig. 5, a vertical slide L<SP>3</SP> of the lathe is advanced to depress the rack K<SP>4</SP> and rock the tool-head appropriately. If one tool is removed, a single helical slot Q, Fig. 11, could be cut, or by indexing the head, work with splines S, Fig. 15, may be produced. For cutting a number of recesses O, Fig. 8, the same number of cutters may be fitted in the head. A parting-tool N is provided on the lathe.
