A method of machining a workpiece surface in a lathe comprises a roughing operation, a finishing operation and an intermediate operation. The latter consists in cutting one or more grooves in a direction non-parallel with the path of the cutting tool on the workpiece surface. The depth of the grooves are equal to or less than the depth of cut of the finishing operation. The grooves may be formed by the quick return motion of the lathe tool.
