578,822. Time-delay locks. ROTHERHAM & SONS. Ltd., and LITCHFIELD, S. E. June 15, 1944, No. 11425. [Class 44] A time lag locking device to release parachutes, operate electric contacts or door locks, comprises a bolt 31 adapted for instance to engage the loop of a parachute and held retracted by a ball 30 which is released by a plunger 11 by means of a step 27 when the plunger has effected a predetermined movement under the influence of the time delay mechanism. When the bolt 31 is moved into locking position the ball 30 which is contained in a slot in the bolt is moved opposite a depression 35. The plunger 11 is then depressed against a spring 17 and the step 27 on the plunger forces the ball into the depression 35. The end of the plunger protrudes from the casing and is held in this position by a release pin. The plunger 11 is controlled by the time delay mechanism 22 by means of a gear train 21 and a rack 19 on the plunger, a free-wheel device allows depression of the plunger, for locking, without disturbing the time delay mechanism. To unlock the bolt the pin is withdrawn from the plunger which after a time delay, releases the ball and allows the bolt 31 to be projected by a spring 34 or if the spring abutment 16 is dispensed with, by the plunger spring 17. The time delay mechanism may be controlled by an escapement, wind vane or eddy current disc. A number of holes may be provided in the end of the plunger for the release pin in order that the apparatus may operate after different time intervals. A modification is shown in which the bolt 31 has a detent to hold the loop of a parachute.
