Abstract

1,047,077. Firing mechanisms. RHEINMETALL G.m.b.H. Dec. 1, 1964 [Dec. 12, 1963], No. 48800/64. Heading F3C. Apparatus for firing guns comprises in combination a breech block 1 in which is mounted an energizing coil 6 and a movable armature 4, a striker 3 and means to operate the striker either electromagnetically or mechanically. The striker 3 is biased to the position shown by a return spring 14 interposed between a washer 16 on the striker and a sleeve 10 partly surrounding the armature and held against a shoulder 11 by a spring 12. Actuation of a firing button causes a current to flow in coil 6 which draws the armature 4 into the coil and the tip 23 of the striker fires the primer of a shell. Mechanical actuation of the striker is effected by pulling a lanyard 27 fixed to a knob 36 on a lever 26. The latter is rigid with a spindle 25 which is formed with a cam that engages a lug on the armature when the spindle is rotated to first draw the armature back compressing spring 12 and then releasing it to cause the kinetic energy of the armature and striker to project the tip of the striker through the opening 24. Spring 14 returning the armature and striker to the position shown. The firing spindle 25 and the lever 26 are returned to their original position by a spring-loaded plunger engaging a shoulder on the spindle. A safety device is provided by a spring-loaded locking pin 37 which is permitted to engage in a hole when the lanyard is removed and the lever 26 is pivoted through a small angle. This movement causes the spindle 25 to rotate so that the cam thereon engages the lug on the armature to slightly draw it back and prevent even electromagnetic firing. At the same time the end 34 of the spring-loaded plunger returning the spindle to its original position projects out of its bore to prevent the handle 2 being moved to open the breech.
