Abstract

578,627. Supply systems for space discharge apparatus ; transformers. STEVENS, A. H. (Boucher Inventions, Ltd.) June 11, 1943, No. 9456. [Classes 38 (ii) and 38 (iv)] Luminescent tubes 12 mounted in a reflector 10 are energised by a transformer 13 housed in a casing 14 secured to the reflector and which also contains a condenser 27 for connecting in series with one or more of the tubes for power factor improvement or for introducing a phase difference between the currents taken by the tubes and thereby reducing flickering. The transformer comprises primaries P1, P2, connected in series, and secondaries S1, S2 either connected in series with each other and the two tubes, or each supplying individual tubes. The primary and secondary windings are mounted on cores 24, 25 respectively, held together by bands 26, 27, and magnetic shunts 28, 34 and 29, 35 are secured to the cores by clamps 40, 41 to limit the current supplied to the tubes. Fig. 7 shows a transformer 71 having secondary windings S9, S10 with a common earth connection 75 to the adjacent ends 78, 80 of luminescent tubes T9, T10, the free ends of the windings being connected to the other ends of the tubes, with the interposition of a phase shift condenser 77 in one connection. A condenser 81 and switch 83 is provided to facilitate starting. The supply 72 is connected to centre tappings on the series-connected primary windings P9, P10, the outer ends of which are connected to a power factor correction condenser 74. In modified circuits the earth connections 75, 78, 80 are replaced by separate connections between each secondary and its tube, and the tubes and secondary windings may alternate in a series circuit.
