Abstract

578,250. Magnetic dust cores. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and BUCKLEY, S. E. Aug. 29, 1944, No. 16407. [Class 38 (ii)] [Also in Group II] In a magnetic dust core the insulating and binding material consists of a non-reactive mixture of inorganic material with between 1 per cent. and 10 per cent. by weight of a high molecular weight organic material. Inorganic materials named are colloidal clay, magnesium hydroxide, sodium silicate, chromic acid, talc, and kaolin, while suitable organic materials are phenol formaldehyde resin, urea formaldehyde resin, polystyrene, shellac, starch, casein, gelatine, dextrin and glue. In manufacturing the core, talc may be mixed with magnetic powder prepared as described in Specification 564,651, which is then annealed, ground to a powder and mixed with the kaolin and such organic materials as are a powder. Sodium silicate and magnesium hydroxide may be added dissolved and suspended respectively in water, and gelatine may also be added in solution. After the cores have been compressed into shape, they may be heat treated to produce a desired permeability or just baked to dry and given a surface coating. The magnetic dust may be formed from an alloy containing 78 per cent. to 82 per cent. nickel, 16 per cent. to 19 per cent. iron and up to 4 per cent. molybdenum. Specifications 269,510, [Class 37], 269,511, [Class 38 (ii)], 357,537 and 438,803, [Group XXXVI], also are referred to.
