Abstract

620,269. Powdered magnetic cores. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and BARDELL, P. R. Jan. 14, 1947, No. 1251. [Class 38 (ii)] In manufacturing a magnetic dust core, a mixture containing magnetic powder, 1.5 to 3.0 per cent by weight of water-glass and 3.5 to 10.0 per cent by weight of china clay, is heated for at least one hour at 550‹ to 650‹ C., and then shaped under pressure. The china clay and water-glass may be made into a paste with water and methylated spirit in a paddle mixer before mixing with the magnetic powder, which may be a 1:4 nickel-iron alloy. The total mixture is heated for several hours at 150‹ C., then at 550‹ to 650‹ C. for at least one hour, 1 per cent by weight of talc is added, the core is compressed at 50-100 tons/sq. inch into a suitable shape, e.g. an annulus, and then heated for one hour at 570-600‹ C. and cooled at 12-35‹ C. per minute. All the heating may be done in a reducing atmosphere. The cores may be coated with synthetic resin, which is polymerized under heat. A suitable water-glass may contain 54 per cent of total solids comprising silica and sodium oxide in ratio 2: 1. Size analysis of a suitable china clay is given, as also are figures of hysteresis loss.
