Abstract
578,166. Electric cautery instruments for nasal surgery. LEW, P. W. April 27, 1944, No. 7858. [Class 39 (iii)] A cautery instrument for nasal surgery has a water cooling circulation system on one side of an electric resistance wire 2 forming the cautery element for protection of other parts of the nose. The U-shaped cautery wire 2 is soldered to insulated wires 3, 4 attached by ferrules 6 to a junction box 8 with a handle with current supply leads 7. Adjacent the cautery wire 2 and insulated therefrom by a thin layer 22 of mica is a flat thin copper box 19 through which water is circulated by inlet and return tubes 16, 17 communicating with passages in the block 8 connected by nipples 24 to rubber tubes 27 for water supply. The cautery element may comprise a straight resistance wire welded to the cooling box 19 which forms with one or both tubes 16, 17 a return path for the current. Water may be fed in by a pump, and the end of the water outlet pipe may be anchored by a weight on the bottom of a tank.
