Abstract

A material for resisting the penetration of war gases, e.g mustard gas, and also flame-proof, is made of non-fibrous hydrophilic cellulosic sheet material impregnated with a hydroxy alkyl amine sulphamate, e.g. mono-, di- or triethanolamine sulphamate. The non-fibrous hydrophilic cellulosic material may be formed by regeneration from viscose, cuprammonium cellulose, or solutions of cellulose in inorganic or organic solvents, e.g. zinc chloride or quaternary ammonium compounds, or by de-esterification of cellulose esters. Alkali-soluble cellulose ethers such as methyl, ethyl, hydroxyethyl and benzyl cellulose, water-soluble cellulose ethers impregnated with a synthetic resin, e.g. urea-formaldehyde, and glycollic acid cellulose ethers may also be used. A sheet of cellulose hydrate in gel form is passed through an aqueous solution of mono-ethanolamine sulphamate and dried.
