Abstract
Preparations containing morphine and suitable for parenteral injection are made by treating an aqueous solution of a morphine salt, e.g. morphine hydrochloride, with acacia gum and adding an alkali such as sodium hydroxide to bring the pH to between 6.9 and 7.0 and to precipitate the morphine in microcrystalline form. The acacia gum may be used as a 10 per cent aqueous dispersion, and preferably this dispersion is approximately one third by volume of the final suspension. Phenol may be added as a preservative. The Provisional Specification refers to the use of a protective colloid, acacia gum being specified.
