Abstract

In moulding &c. apparatus for heat- and pressure-treating thermoplastic or thermosetting insulating material by a high-frequency electric field, surface chilling and loss of heat are reduced by providing the electrodes with a facing of high-loss, heat-stable, insulating material of cellular form such as porous cordierite, porcelain having similar qualities, a foamed resin of the phenol-, cresol-, melamine-, or urea-formaldehyde type, or of foamed polyvinylidene chloride where it is not plasticised by the heated material. Where a foamed plastic is used, the outer surface of the facing is preferably covered with a skin of a non-cellular, high-loss, heat-resistant material. The facing may be secured by an adhesive such as polyvinyl acetal, and preferably has a thickness of about .01 inches.
