Abstract

869,285. Dielectric heating of leather. HODGSON & SONS Ltd., RICHARD, and GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Oct. 14, 1958 [Oct. 22, 1957], No. 32916/57. Class 39(3). [Also in Groups VII and XVI] A method of shaping leather comprises the steps of dielectrically heating leather having a moisture content of between 13%. and 21% moisture by weight of air dry leather to a temperature in the range 90 to 60‹C. to render the leather pliant, shaping the leather as required, any loss of water by evaporation from the leather during heating being substantially avoided, and cooling the shaped leather. The leather is heated dielectrically by placing it for a period of from 20 seconds to 3 minutes in an electric field applied at frequencies of up to 100 megacycles. A generator providing a power density ranging between 10 and 100 watts per cubic inch may be used. The electric field is applied between two parallel plates on one of which the leather rests; an air space may be left between the leather and the other plate or a layer of electrically insulating material such as mica may be inserted therebetween in contact with the leather to prevent evaporation of the freed water from the leather. The leather may be coated with a resin or other similar material to prevent loss of moisture. The moulding may be effected in a water-cooled mould or the heating plates may be in the form of a press in which the leather is moulded after heating.
