Abstract

577,448. Charging batteries. PARTRIDGE, WILSON & CO., Ltd., and LOACH, F. A. Aug. 24, 1944, No. 16136. [Class 38 (iv)] The current controlling means for a static rectifier battery charging apparatus comprises, in combination, a contactor 3 which is arranged between the rectifier 2 and the A.C. source 1 and which is adapted for electro-magnetic operation to the " on " position from a normal " off " position, a relay 4, adapted to be electromagnetically opened from a normal closed position, and a condenser 5 in series with the coil 6 of the relay, the contacts 9, 10 of the relay being in series with the coil 11 of the contactor 3. With the circuit as shown, when a battery 14 is connected to the output terminals 15, 16, the coil 11 is energised from the battery to close the contactor 3. The rectified A.C. from the rectifier 2 charges the battery, but, because of the constant D.C. voltage from the battery, does not affect the coil 6. When, however, the battery is disconnected, the rectified intermittent A.C. energises coil 6 and opens contacts 9, 10, thereby de-energising coil 11 and opening contactor 3. When the rectifier output ceases, the coil 6 is de-energised and contacts 9, 10 reclose in readiness for the next charging operation.
