Abstract

840,388. Control of motors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. March 17, 1958 [March 21, 1957], No. 9317/57. Class 38 (3). [Also in Group XXXV] A motor generator set, comprising an A.C. motor coupled to a D.C. generator, has starting means which connect the generator to a power supply. The A.C. motor 1 is supplied via a contact 3 and is coupled to a D.C. generator 4. The coil 8c is energized via contacts 3 OUT and 13, closing the contacts 8 and connecting the battery 5 to the generator 4 via the field winding 6. The current through the relay coil 7c causes the contacts 7 to be broken. When the current through the coil 7c has fallen to a low value the contacts 7 are closed and the coil 3c is energized and holds in over the contacts 3 IN. The contacts 3 close the input circuit to the motor 1. The coil 8c is de-energized thus opening the contacts 8 and the voltage across the generator gives sufficient current through the coil 11c to close the contacts 11 and energize the coil 12c. The contacts 12 connect to the battery to the generator 4. The voltage regulator 10 controls the current through the field winding 9. In a further embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) the generator is supplied, for starting, by rectifiers from an A.C. supply. The A.C. supply may be that used for the motor or a separate supply. The generator may alternatively be supplied with A.C. The motor may be connected to its supply on starting or the connections may be delayed until the generator reaches a certain speed.
