Abstract

577,310. Supplying liquid fuel. PUGH, C. A., BOOTH, D. G., and PLESSEY CO., Ltd. May 19, 1941, No. 6431. [Class 7 (iii)] Fuel-supply apparatus for internal-combustion engines or other fuel-consuming means used more especially in aircraft comprises a main fuel pump having its inlet connected to a fuel tank and its outlet serving to deliver fuel under pressure to an engine, a second pump having its inlet connected to the fuel tank, means controlling the delivery of this second pump to boost the pressure at the inlet of the main pump or at the inlets of both pumps, and for alternatively directing the flow of both pumps to the engine. In the arrangement shown in the Figure, the control valve 51 is shown in the normal position. In this position the secondary positive displacement pump 41 draws fuel from the tank 42 and forces it through the valve 51 to the inlet 49 to the main pump 40. This pump, which is fitted with a relief valve controlled by-pass, delivers fuel to the engine by way of pipes 53, 56 under the control of a throttle valve 55 and a speed-responsive control mechanism 200. When starting the engine the valve 51 is operated to put the pumps in parallel. In this position excessive pressure in the secondary pump outlet is relieved through a spring-loaded by-pass valve 61 while in the former position it is relieved through a spring-loaded by-pass valve 46 which also provides a seat for a spring-loaded non-return valve (not shown) through which the main pump is supplied when the pumps are in parallel. In a modification the secondary pump, in the normal running position, forces fuel through an injector boosting device housed in the fuel tank. Specification 577,311, [Group XXIX], is referred to.
