Abstract

816,449. Fuel injection pumps. C. A. V. Ltd. Feb. 24, 1958 [Feb. 25, 1957], No. 6190/57. Class 102(1). [Also in Group XXVI] In a liquid fuel supply system for an internal combustion engine in which an engine-driven injection pump a is supplied with fuel from a supply tank g by a feed pump e, means are provided responsive to a fall in pressure of the fuel supplied by the feed pump for moving the injection pump control member b to the zerodelivery position and thus stopping the engine. The feed pump is driven by an electric motor f controlled by a switch h and delivers fuel through a pipe o to the injection pump and to a cylinder i having a diaphragm or piston k arranged to act as a spring-loaded lever m. In normal operation the pressure of the fuel in the pipe o acts on the piston k to keep the lever m in an inoperative position, the injection pump then being controlled by the normal governor c or by a manually operable lever d. If the tank g empties whilst the engine is running, the consequent fall in pressure in the pipe o allows the lever m to be moved by the spring n to move the member b to the position at which the injection pump ceases to deliver fuel, the engine thereby being stopped and the risk of drawing air into the system avoided.
