576,974. Vitreous enamels. CHICAGO VITREOUS ENAMEL PRODUCT CO. Feb.. 10, 1944, No. 2494. Convention date, Sept. 27, 1943. [Class 56] In the preparation of silicate coatings which are water, chemical and scratch resistant, finely-divided carbon -is added to aqueous suspensions of silicates to aid in the subsequent liberation of water during heating. An alkali silicate and an aluminium compound may be milled in a finely-dispersed aqueous dispersion, the finely-divided carbon added, the solution spread in the form of a film and heated to bring about a reaction between the silicate and the. aluminium compound, the heating then being continued to liberate the water. The carbon may be in the form of charcoal, lamp black, graphite, powdered coal or coke, and an emulsifying agent such as triethanolamine soap or a wetting agent such as a higher molecular weight alcohol sulphate or sulphonate or a substituted aromatic sulphonic acid may be added.
