Abstract

576,726. Cartridges. KELLER, S., and KELLER, E. Aug. 12, 1943, No. 13098. [Class 9 (i)] A cartridge for an automatic gun is so designed that on initial impact of the breech block to drive the cartridge towards the breech, relative displacement or deformation of parts of the cartridge is produced, this displacement or deformation damping or partly absorbing the impact of the blow. By this means the cartridge is prevented from being accelerated excessively and thus from getting in front of the extractor claw. Four examples are described: (1) the cartridge case 1 is crimped at its forward end 2 in a recess 3 in the projectile, when the case is struck by the breech block, the end moves forward until it abuts against the guide ring 4 on the projectile ; (2) the case is in two partly telescoped parts, which are fully telescoped by the impact of the breech block ; (3) the base 11 is held in the case 1 by a fine thread 12 which is stripped by the impact; (4) projections 13 on the base of the case are deformed by the impact.
