Abstract

576,644. Rotary meters. AVERY-HARDOLL, Ltd., and GILPIN, W. R. April 24, 1944, No. 5465. [Class 110 (ii)] In a meter having meshing rotors c, c<1>, and liquid inlet and outlet points a<1>, a<2>, the indicating mechanism n is driven through epicyclic gearing, including a loosely-mounted pinion l, and a magnetic coupling with parts q, ql separated by a partition r. Pinions m, ml may be exchanged for another pair to vary the speed of the pinion l and thus, through the differential pinions n, n<1> to vary the gear ratio and provide an accurate means of initial correction of the meter to the required conditions. A filter b is fitted. The rotors c, c<1>, turned by the flow of the liquid and being coupled by gears d, d' contact with recesses c<4> in the fixed hubs H. A by-pass valve h<1> may be opened by means of an external handle f, and a stepped plug g, to allow direct flow from a<1> to a<2>. The rotor c, mounted on a spindle c2, drives a pinion k in mesh with a spur wheel k<1> mounted on a spindle k<2> to the opposite end of which is keyed the pinion m. Pinion ml is mounted on a spindle m<2> which has fixed to it a wheel m<3> meshing with the loosely-mounted pinion l on a sleeve l<2>. The latter has a flange carrying differential planet wheels n, n<1> on spindles l<1>. Wheels n<1> are geared to, and revolve around, a sun wheel n<2>, pinned to the spindle k<2>, and wheels n mesh with a sun wheel o<2>. The pinion o drives a spindle p<1>, and through a shaft p<1> the magnetic coupling q<1>, q which revolve in oil and air respectively. Instead of using interchangeable pinions m, m<1>, the intermittently-acting clutch w, Fig. 5, is acted on by a cam x mounted on the spindle k <2>. Intermittent and adjustably variable motion is imparted to the shaft m<2> through the clutch, transmitted through the gear m<3> to the pinion l, thus fixing the setting of the planet wheels n, n<1> in relation to the sun wheels n<2> and o<2>. A spring y exerts a constant pull on an arm w' of the clutch w.
