576,350. Bomb fuzes. MIDGLEY, A. H. Feb. 7, 1944, No. 2270. [Class 9 (i)] A multi-directional fuze after arming is actuated on impact by displacement of a member h within a sleeve f lightly held before impact only by contact of its flange h<1> with balls g, the latter normally holding in position the sleeve f by means of apertures in the sleeve and corresponding recesses in the body a of the fuze. The sleeve f holds from operation the firing mechanism which may consist of a spring-loaded striker b resting on balls c restrained from moving sideways by the flange d' of a sleeve d held between the body of the fuze and the sleeve f. The member h is initially locked by a screwed pin i engaging the member h and the body of the fuze with threads of equal pitch. When the fuze is attached to a bomb, the cap m and safety plate e<1> are removed and the fly-nut k on the end of the pin i coupled to a propeller shaft in the tail unit of the bomb. On release of the bomb, the pin i is thus withdrawn, leaving the member h held only by its contact with the balls g. On impact, the member h is jerked free from the balls g which are thus released, allowing the spring e to displace the sleeves d and f, thus releasing the balls c restraining the striker b. A detent l engaging a slot in the flange h<1> of the member h prevents the latter turning when the pin i is withdrawn.
