Abstract

Yellow azo dyestuffs are made by heating a 4 : 41 - dibenzthiazyl - (2) - azobenzene which has directly substituted in it at least one chloromethyl group, and may optionally carry one or more alkyl (1-4C) or alkoxy (1-4C) substituents, with a tertiary amine. The products, which appear to be quaternary ammonium salts, dye cellulosic materials yellow from a dyebath containing mild alkali, e.g. sodium carbonate or bicarbonate. In examples, dyestuffs are made from di-(chloromethyl)-4 : 41-di-(6-methylbenzthiazyl-2)-azobenzene and pyridine, tetramethylthiourea, triethylamine or hexahydro-dimethylaniline and the dyeing of cotton yarn is described. Other components specified are di-(chloromethyl)-4 : 41-di-(benzthiazyl-2)-azobenzene and di-(chloromethyl)-4 : 41-di-(6-ethoxybenzthiazyl - 2) - azobenzene, and triethanolamine and b -diethylaminoethyl alcohol. A sample has been furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of the dyestuff obtained by the action of pyridine on di-(chloromethyl)-4 : 41-bis-(4 : 6-dimethylbenzthiazyl - 2) - 2 : 21 - dimethylazobenzene (obtainable by the action of sym.-dichlordimethyl ether on 4 : 41-bis-(4 : 6-dimethylbenzthiazyl - 2) - 2 : 21 - dimethylazobenzene, which may be obtained by oxidizing dehydrothio-m-xylidine with sodium hypochlorite). 4 : 41-Dibenzthiazyl-(2)-azobenzene derivatives used as starting materials above are made by treating the appropriate 4 : 41-dibenzthiazyl-(2) - azobenzene with sym. - dichlorodimethyl ether. 4 : 41-Di-(benzthiazyl-2)-azobenzene is made by the oxidation of 2-p-aminophenylbenzthiazole. 4 : 41-Di-(6-ethoxybenzthiazyl-2)-azobenzene is made by the oxidation of 2-p-aminophenyl-6-ethoxybenzthiazole, obtainable by the reduction of 2-p-nitrophenyl-6-ethoxybenzthiazole, itself obtainable by condensation of the zinc salt of 2-amino-5-ethoxythiophenol with p-nitrobenzoyl chloride.
