Abstract
576,159. Aerials. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., and FRANKLIN, C. S. Dec. 4, 1942, No. 17297. Addition to 573,896. [Class 40 (v)] A directional aerial comprises a straight helix formed from a conductor which is first wound into a primary helix of small diameter, the primary helix being then wound into a secondary helix as shown in Fig. 2. The dimensions are such that l+s=#, being the distance in wavelengths along the primary helix between corresponding points of two successive travelling waves, and s the spacing between turns in wavelengths. In use, the aerial may be energized at one end and terminated at the other end by an earthed impedance. The primary helix may be wound on a cord, strip or other former which may be left within the helix when the latter is wound on a second former. Either helix may be square, polygonal, circular, or elliptical in cross-section and may be flattened to constitute a succession of zig-zags. The pitch or diameter of the primary helix may be progressively varied.
