Abstract

576,091. Aircraft doors' or bulk-heads. WESTLAND AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and RICHARDS, S. T. A. July 16, 1942, No. 9903. [Class 123 (i)] [Also in Group XXXIII] Aircraft doors or bulkheads are hinged to the fuselage by means of a bracket that is hinged at one end about a substantially vertical axis to the fuselage and at the other end to a member which has a spigot and socket connection with the door or the like. As applied to a front bulkhead adapted to serve as a closure for a pressure cabin, the nose a of the fuselage is attached to a sheet b of armour-plate steel which with a ring-shaped casting c forms the bulkhead proper. The casting c comprises a ring d gapped to provide radial sectors k which co-operate with gaps in a ring fixed to the cabin to form a bayonet type fastening for the bulkhead, which is hinged by a bracket g pivoted on an axis h to the inner wall of the cabin and on an axis i.to a member f mounted on a spigot e secured to the plate b. The spigot is slidable in the member f against the action of a spring to permit engagement and disengagement of the bayonet fitting. The axes h, i are slightly inclined to the plane of the plate b so that. they may be vertical when the aircraft is on the ground with the tail down. To effect sealing of the cabin, a flat rubber ring secured to the casting c is adapted to engage a projecting portion of a ring on the cabin. Arrangements of front and rear bulkheads or doors are shown in which the bracket is arranged, when the bulkhead is closed, to be either within the cabin as shown or outside the cabin and within the nose portion of the bulkhead.
