Abstract

[Class 4] [Also in Group X] A portlight fitted to a window opening in the wall of an aircraft pressure cabin comprises an inner domed transparent panel, subject to the pressure difference between the exterior and the interior of the cabin and held in position to seal the window opening by the excess pressure within the cabin, and an outer transparent panel flush with the outer skin of the aircraft. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, the thickened edge 20 of a part spherical transparent panel 19 is held by the excess internal pressure against a rubber sealing ring 17 on one side of a bezel 15. The panel 19 is in compression and its rim may slide on the ring 17 to accommodate changes in shape of the panel due to pressure and temperature changes. A rubber sealing ring 16 is mounted between the bezel 15 and a circular reinforcing member 18 surrounding an opening in the cabin skin 13. A metal ring 21 and a rubber ring 22 locate the dome in position. An unstressed transparent disc 14 is attached to the bezel 15 and has breather holes 23 passing atmospheric air to the space 24 through silica gel accommodated in an annular groove in the bezel. A third transparent panel 26 provides a duct 28 through which warm air may be circulated to prevent icing or misting and reduce heat transfer from the cabin. In a further embodiment illustrated in Fig. 7 the domed panel 19 is concave inwardly and is therefore in tension. The bezel 15 carrying the outer panel 14 is supported by an annular bracket 32 on a pressure-tight metal ring 33 mounted coaxially with the window opening and carrying a rubber sealing ring 34 against which the bead 31 at the rim of the panel 119 is held by the pressure inside the cabin. In each embodiment a conical metal fairing 27 is provided. Figs. 3-6, 8 and 9 (not shown), illustrate alternative forms of beading and sealing at the rim of the domed panel and mounting of the bezel. The construction enables windows of a given weight to be made larger and thus to function as emergency escape hatches.
