Abstract
575,749. Heat-exchangers. MIDLAND TAR DISTILLERS, Ltd., and DAVIES, E. B. April 4, 1944, No. 6282. [Class 64 (iii)] A viscous fluid, e.g., pitch, is cooled by heat exchange with a cooling fluid, e.g., tar, which is separated from the viscous liquid by two walls with a space between them, this space being maintained full of a vapour of a liquid with a boiling point between the temperatures of the two walls. In the apparatus shown, hot pitch flows from a header 16 with an inlet 17 through tubes 11, a number of which are arranged side by side, to a header 19 with an outlet 20. The tubes 11 are each composed of two U-shaped parts connected by a union 18. Each U-shaped' part is surrounded by a U-tube 12 opening into the intermediate header 23 and into either the header 22 or the header 24. Steam supplied to the header 22 flows through the outer U-tubes 12 and header 23 to the header 24 which is connected to a steam trap 26. Tar flows through the casing 10 surrounding the tubes, from the inlet 13 to the outlet 14. Baffles 15 are provided. Volatile fractions distilled from the tar escape through the outlet 27. Another form of apparatus comprises three concentric tubes of which the outermost is sealed at its ends to the middle tube, which is sealed at its ends to the innermost tube. The pitch to be cooled flows through the latter, and the cooling fluid through the outermost tube. Instead of the vapour space being closed against egress of vapour, vapour may be allowed to flow continuously through the space. Instead of steam, a fraction from the distillation of tar may be used.
