[Class 51 (i)] [Also in Groups XXVI and XXIX] Apparatus for controlling the flow of gaseous fluid, particularly the flow of exhaust steam from the cylinders of a locomotive to the blast pipe outlet, comprises a passage open at one end, an exhaust expansion chamber connected thereto, and a chamber leading from the passage and provided with a pressure relief valve assembly to allow for the escape of the exhaust steam when it exceeds a predetermined pressure. As shown in Figs 1 and 4, the blast pipe 7 is provided with an expansion chamber 8 and a by-pass 10, 11 open to the atmosphere and including a valve chamber 9 in which valves 17 are retained on their seats 16 by gravity and opened by excess pressure of exhaust steam to allow the steam to pass through the pipe 11 to atmosphere. The weights of the valves may be varied so that they may open at various back pressure levels. Fig. 6 shows a modification in which the valve chamber 9a is mounted on the expansion chamber 8a and the valves 17a are guided in openings of partitions 22, 23. In the _modification shown in Figs. 10, 11, the expansion chamber 8b and the valve chamber surround the blast pipe 7b. The valves are guided in perforated sleeves 18a. The valve chamber may be divided by radial partitions into compartments, one of which is provided with an exhaust steam passage 40 having its outlet controlled by a valve 41 operated by a piston in a cylinder 42 supplied with pressure air under control of the cut-off gear 45.
