Abstract
574,761. Drying ceramic ware. JOHNSON, J. A. Feb. 16, 1944, No. 2882. [Class 34 (ii)] Articles of pottery and other ceramic ware are dried in a vertical chamber a divided by a vertical partition e into two compartments c, d through which heated air is circulated and the said ceramic articles are traversed by multi-tiered carriers s mounted between endless conveyers h suspended between upper and lower pairs of rotatable sprockets i. As shown, the partition e is hollow and divided intermediate at its ends by a transverse member o, opposite sides of this member being open to the delivery and suction sides of a fan through ports p, q; openings f, g are also provided in the partition, respectively in one side of its upper part and in the opposite side of its lower part. The compartment c has an airlock t at its lower end, where the carriers s enter the chamber a, and the compartment d an air-lock u between zones C, D of the latter, and both the zone C and the upper zone B of the compartment c locate steam &c. heating pipes r. The arrangement is such that while the articles are traversing the compartments c, d from the air-lock t in the direction of the arrows, air from the fan will pass through the port p and openings f into the zone C and from thence, at a decreasing temperature, through the zone B, a lower zone A, and the openings g and port q back to the fan, the articles being cooled in the zone D by an ascending stream of cold air which is drawn in by the fan from the outer atmosphere and through apertures v in the lower end of the partition opposite the openings g. Means for injecting a steam. or water spray for humidifying purposes may be provided in the zone B.
