Abstract

574,564. Refrigerating. STEVENS, A. H. (Gibson Electric Refrigerator Corporation). Dec. 1, 1943, No. 20079. [Class 29] [Also in Group XXIX] Absorption systems. In a system in which a continuously heated generator 10 is replenished intermittently with strong liquor from an absorber vessel 25, transfer of the liquor through a vessel 36 is controlled by a valve device 37 comprising a ported piston valve 49, Fig. 2, actuated by a thermal element 4 6 in the generator and movable from a fully open position, in which a high pressure vapour conduit 43 connects with a conduit 42, leading to the top of the transfer vessel and a liquor conduit 41 from the bottom of the transfer vessel connects with a conduit 44 leading to the generator, to a fully closed position in which all connections are blocked. Vapour rising through an analyser column 13 above the generator passes through a rectifier 17 and down to an air cooled condenser 19, and the condensate is raised by the vapour pressure to a receiver 21 fitted with a float valve controlling flow to the evaporator 22. Vapour flows from the evaporator through a pipe 31 leading into the riser limb 30 of a liquor-cooling circuit including a pipe 26 from the absorber vessel, a jacket 27 around the transfer vessel, a pipe 28 and air-cooled coil 29 and the return pipe 30. Absorption takes place in the pipe 30 and some liquor is delivered therefrom by open branches 30a into a vessel 38 connected by a conduit 39 to a check valve 40 to the bottom of the transfer vessel. The weak liquor flows through a conduit 34 and float valve 32 to the absorption vessel, and a restricted flow is provided through a passage 53 to the transfer vessel. When the valve piston 49 is raised by the action of the thermal element condenser pressure is established in conduit 42 and the transfer vessel to deliver the contents of the vessel through conduit 44 and a jacket 45 of the thermal element to the analyser column. The cooling of the thermal element is rapid and the valve is reversed. The restricted flow of liquor into the transfer vessel causes absorption of residual vapour and reduction of pressure below that of the absorber vessel, and the check valve opens to admit fresh liquor until the vessel fills and a back pressure closes the check valve. A float 52 in the transfer vessel separates the vapour and liquid to reduce absorption.
