Abstract

581,009. Refrigerating. STEVENS, A. H. (Gibson Electric Refrigerator Corporation). Dec. 1, 1943, No. 20081. [Class 29] Absorption systems.-For a system of the kind in which the generator 10 is replenished periodically with strong liquor from an absorber vessel 25 through a transfer vessel 35 alternately at generator and absorber pressures, a "pressure vessel" 37 is provided between the absorber and transfer vessels, whereby residual vapour vented from the transfer vessel is quietly absorbed in liquor in the pressure vessel, and a change-over valve device 36 is subject to opposed high and low pressures for a short period only at each transfer. The system shown includes an analyser column 13, rectifier 17, air cooled condenser 19, refrigerant receiver 21 and evaporator 22, and vapour from the evaporator is led through a cooling coil 29 in the pressure vessel and then to the riser limb 28 of a cooling circuit 26, 27, 28 for liquor from the absorber vessel. The vapour lifts the liquor in limb 28 and is absorbed therein. Part of the liquor flows out of branch nozzles 28a into a jacket 38 leading by pipe 39 and check valve 40 to the pressure vessel. Weak liquor flows from the generator by a pipe 33 to a float valve 32 in the absorber vessel. The valve device 36 is moved, when high temperature affects a thermostat element 54 in the generator, to connect a high pressure vapour conduit 45 with a conduit 43 to the transfer vessel and a conduit 42 with a conduit 46 to discharge the contents of the transfer vessel to the generator. The conduit 46 connects with a jacket 47 around the thermal element and the liquor rapidly cools this element to produce a reverse movement of the valve 36. The conduits 45, 46 are cut off, the conduit 43 is connected with conduit 44, and a conduit 41 to conduit 42. Vapour rising from the transfer vessel is absorbed by residual liquor in the pressure vessel and by weak liquor bleeding through a small orifice 49, a reduction of pressure ensues and liquor enters the pressure vessel past the check valve until both'transfer vessel and pressure vessel are filled, when the continued bleeding of liquor raises the pressure to close the check valve. As shown in Fig. 2 the check valve 40 is a metal disc, while the bleeder orifice is provided by a small fluted passage in a plug fitted in a sleeve. Modifications are described in which the pressure vessel is built into the lower part of the absorber vessel, and the bleeder orifice replaced by a valve held open by a spring except under high pressure in the pressure vessel.
