Abstract

574,474. Sliding-window holders. HILL, T. D. Feb. 1, 1944, Nos. 1883 and 21510. [Class 44] In a holder for sliding windows of the type in which a spring-loaded catch co-operating with a rack is double-bevelled and capable of limited up-and-down movement as well as a to-and-fro movement in the aperture of a plate-member through which it projects into engagement with the rack, the catch is mounted so that the up-and-down movement is a rocking one about a bearing well to the rear of the apertured plate. The catch may be mounted on the sash and the rack on the fixed frame, or vice versa, and similar catches and racks are preferably provided at both sides of the window with the catches about midway down the styles of the sash. As shown the rack is mounted on the fixed frame 11 and has ratchet teeth with substantially horizontal faces 13 on which the catch rests to hold the window in adjusted position, and curved sloping faces 14 which meet the faces 13 substantially vertically. The catch has a head 5 of rectangular cross-section capable of limited vertical movement between the upper and lower edges of an aperture 6 in an attachment plate 1 secured flush with the edges of the sash 3 by screws 2. The head is bevelled with rounded faces, the bend of the lower face being less steep than that of the upper face. Projecting rearwardly from the head is a pin 8 loosely anchored in a slot 9 formed in a yoke-piece 4 riveted to plate 1, the slot providing a fulcrum about which the vertical rocking movement of the catch occurs. A volute compression spring 7 surrounds pin 8 between the back of member 4 and the head 5 which has lateral lugs 10 limiting its outward movement through aperture 6. To lower the sash from the position of rest shown in Fig. 1, it is first slightly raised, the catch rocking anti-clockwise to the position shown in Fig. 2. The sash is then lowered sharply, the catch making a slight clockwise rotation and sliding inwards against the action of the spring to clear the rack teeth successively. When brought to rest in the desired position of adjustment, the catch resumes the holding condition shown in Fig. 1. According to the first Provisional Specification, the catch has two rearwardly extending pins each surrounded by a helical spring, and the device may be locked by a pin inserted behind the catch or behind the pins to prevent inward release movement of the catch. According to the second Provisional Specification, the locking is effected by a bolt slidable at right angles to the plane of the sash and pulled outwards to effect locking. The bolt has a hinged handle which, in the inward or release position of the bolt, is received in a recess in the sash.
