Description

REGULATOR Filed June 17, 1953' Patented Nov. 1, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT or ies Application June 1'7, 1933, Serial No. 676,372 In Australia June 17,1932
1 Claim.
This invention relates to devices, known as openers, stays, or holders, for use in opening easements, windows, fanlights, and the like, and for securing them in the open or closed position.
5 The device covered by this invention is such that the easements or the like may be opened and closed with little effort on the part of the operator and then securely held in any desired position. The device may be arranged to operate left or right handed, and for the operation of pivot hung windows it may be applied to any type whether side pivot hung, center or out of center vertical pivot hung, and so on.
The invention consists of a guide with a rack formed thereon, a carrier slidable thereon, a
locking block rotatably carried thereby and having teeth thereon which can be caused to engage with the teeth of the rack, and a finger piece on the locking block. An arm or stay, articulated at one end to the carrier, is provided with a pivoted pin and base at the other end. According to the type of window, the guide and rack are secured to the sash or window frame, as the case may be, and the pivoted pin on the arm or stay is secured on the frame or sash.
In order that the invention may vbe better understood it will now be more fully described with the aid of the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one form of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional elevation;
Fig. 3 is a front view;
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the rack engaging surface of the locking block.
The invention consists of a guide A formed with a rack B on its face. carrier C is slidably carried and it in turn carries a locking block D capable of rotation and having teeth D on one face. These teeth D which are preferably substantially inverted V shape, normally engage the teeth l0 (preferably V or diamond shape) of the rack B, as in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4, but they may be rotated out of engagement, as in broken lines in Figure 2. The locking block D is provided with and actuated by a finger piece E.
The stay F is articulated to the carrier 0 and to a base or standard G which is secured to any 50 suitable support. I
Generally speaking, the device will be used with the casement or the like.
On this guide a- The operation of the invention is: as follows:-- 'i To open the casement, window or fanlight, as the case, may be, the finger piece E is raised as shown in broken lines in Fig. 2. The teeth on the looking block D being thereby freed from the teeth In of the rack B, the block D can be slid along on the guide A causing the stay F to push open The, finger piece E is then turned to the full line position and the locking piece locked with the rack B.
As the teeth D of the block D are of inverted V-shape they engage the diamond shaped teeth In of the rack B with a cam or wedging action that insures a tight and non-rattling fit without requiring a strong effort on the part of the operator.
-Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is:- r
A device of the class described, comprising an elongated guide, a rack formed on said guide, the teeth of said rack being diamond-shaped in plan to provide diverging wedge surfaces on the portions of said teeth extending at right angles to said guide, a carrier slidably mounted on said guide, a rotatable locking block carried by said carrier, said block having an arcuate surface with its axis parallel to said rack, substantially V-shaped teeth formed on said surface of said block, said teeth being engageable with said wedge surfaces of a selected rack tooth whereby to wedge the latter between said teeth on said lock and frictionally maintain said block in a rack tooth engaging position, and said block being rotatable on its aforesaid axis to withdraw its teeth from engagement with said rack tooth to permit said block to be slid along said guide. ANDREW BAXTER LEVEN.
