UNITED STATES'PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS CHRISTOFFEL, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FREDERICK ISELI, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
WINDOW-FRAME \VITI'I SASH-GORD HOLDER.
Application filed April 24,
Y '0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, TrIoMAs CHms'rorrEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Window-Frame with Sash-Cord Holder,
' of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to window frames with removable sash, and the objects are, first, to further improve upon the device covered by my United States Patent N 0. 1,135,662, issued April 13, 1915; secondly, to further provide means for suspending the sash weights before detaching the sa'shes therefrom and for holding the sash cords within convenient reach of the operator when he returns the removed sash to the frame.
In the accompanying drawing :'Figure 1 is a vertical section about as on the line 1-1 in Fig. 2 of a window frame and sash embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section substantially on the line 22 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail rear elevation of one of the sash cord retaining devices. Fig. 4 is a right hand edge View of Fig. 3 with the tiltable member of it in position for holding a sash cord, the latter is shown in dotted line as held in said member. Fig. 5 is a detail rear view of the mechanism by which the pocket closing strip 14 has its upper end attached to the window frame. Fig. 6 is a right hand edge view of Fig. 5 and portions of the wood work secured thereto. Fig. 7 is a front elevation of the plate 29 in Figs. 5 and 6. Fig. 8 is a section on the line 8-8 in Fig. 2 with the link 24 intact and the pocket strip 14 in full line instead of dotted in its pushed back position in Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing by reference numerals, 1O designates a window frame having the usual pulleys 11 for sash cords 12 and sashes of which only one of each is shown. The frame is provided with the usual pocket strip like 14 in Fig. 2 for the placing and. removal of sash weights (not shown) said strips being usually beveled at their ends as at 15 and held by'a peg or screw 16 at the upper end and a screw 17 in the lower end.
In each window frame having my invention one of said strips is modified as the strip 14, which has recessed into it at 18 and secured by nails 19 or other means, a portion 20 of the parting, strip 20. Said strip 14 may Specification of Letters Patent.

or may not have one edge beveled as at 21 in Flg. S to fit against asimilar bevel 22 on the frame. The other edge of the strip is not beveled but near its lower end it has a shallow recess 23 in which is placed a link 24 having its upper end pivoted at 25 to the frame, and its lower end pivoted at 26 to the strip, so that it always occupies a more or less inclined position by which to give the strip a tendency to close by its own weight. The upper end of the strip is also connected to the frame by a link 27, shown in Fig. 2.
The link 27 is a fiat metal bar having at its lower end trunnions 28 recessed into the strip 14 and retained therein as journals by a U-shaped plate 29, which is secured by screws 30 to the strip. Near the middle of plate 27 are two lugs 31 in which are journaled trunnions 32 of a bed plate 33, which is secured by screws 34 to the frame 10. The upper end of the plate 27 is formed with a hook 35 adapted to be forced into and out of hooking engagement with the upper end 33 of the bed plate The .upper ends 36 of the plate 29 are slightly off-set so as to be engaged and covered by the lower shoulders 37 of the plate 27.
Slightly higher up than the hook 35 is inserted and secured by screws 38, in each sash channel of the frame a plate 39, which has an elongated central aperture 40 (see Figs. 3 and 4) with cheeks 41 along the longer edges of the aperture, said cheeks project at right angles to the plate into the wood of the frame, and between said cheeks is pivoted at piece 43 having a notch 44 adapted to receive, and by tilting on its pivot pinch and hold the sash cord 12, the way shown in Figs. 1 and 4. When said device is idle the tumbler 42 is held in the aperture 40 by having a dent 45 engaged by a slight projection 46 on one of the cheeks 41.
In the operation of the invention when it is desired to remove the sashes from the frame for repair 01' for washing the windows, the sash cords are first attached in the catches 43, the inner or lower sash is pushed laterally against the strip 14 with sufficient force to unlock the hook 35 and push the strip to the position shown in dotted line in Fig. 2, this admits the sash so far into the opening the strip had previously occupied that the opposite edge 47 of the sash will pass by the window stop 48 (see'Fig. 2) and thus the sash may be pulled into the room, the knots 19 of the cords 12 whereupon the pocket strip 14 is replaced to normal position in the aperture in the frame. This is done by simply pushing outward on the hook 35 until it interlocks with the top edge 33* of the plate 33. The strip is held in closed position with suflicicnt firmness by said hook and by having its beveled bottom end engaged with the inclined face 51 of the frame, in which lowere'd position the strip is held by the links 24, 27. The inward movement of the strip is stopped by face 52 of the window stop 58, (see Fig. 8) and also by the beveled faces 21, 22 and by the meeting of the small bevels 54c and 549 of the portion 20 of the parting strip with the bevels 54 and 54 of the portions 20 of it. All of said meeting surfaces and the plate 33 serve not only the mechanical purposes just described, but they further serve to exclude cold draft through the pocket when the strip is in closed position. 55 in Fig. 1 designates a recess in the wood of the frame, so that if the hook 35 should ever stick, it can be loosened by the point of a screw driver or similar tool inserted into said recess and tilted over the edge of the plate 39.
From the foregoing description it will be understood that my device obviates the ne cessity of climbing ladders to washwindows from the outside as well as for hanging and removing storm sash and screens. It also enables the sash cord to be secured to the frame before the sash is detached and held in readiness for replacement into the sash whether the sash has been removed in the manner provided for by my side pocket strip or the sash has been removed in the old way, by removing first the window stop and entire strip.
What I claim is 1. A window frame having a side aperture large enough for either sash of the window to slip edgewise into it, a strip ar-' ranged in said aperture to'close it, and having each end attached to the frame by alink which allows the displacement ofthe strip into thesash weight pocket, the lower link occupying at all times a more or less inclined position whereby the weight of the strip tends to close it and hold it closed, said strip arranged when closed to stop against the window stop, said strip having its lower end beveled and engaged with a beveled portion of the frame to aid in keeping the strip closed, and means for holding the upper end of the strip closed, said-holding means for the upper end of the strip comprising a bed plate secured on the frame adjacent the edge of the sash, a vertically oblong plate hinged near its middle to the lower end of the bed plate, and having its upper arm formed with a broad hook adapted when the arm is sprung by pressure to'eng'age over the top end of the bed plate, the other arm or portion of the oblong plate below said hinge being hingedly attached to the strip so as to form the said upper link thereof. v
2. The structure specified in claim 1, said oblong plate having its link portion or lower arIn reduced in width and the hinging of said upper link to the strip, comprising trunnions on the link recessed'into the face of the strip and a U-shaped plate secured by screws to the strip and serving to keep the trunnions in the recesses; the arms of said U-shaped plate straddling the link portion of the oblong plate and projecting slightly up under the broader portion of the said oblong plate. 7
In testimony whereof I aflix'my signature.
THOMAS OHBISTO'FFEL.
