Be it known that I, JACOB BRAFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain'new and useful Improvementsr in Window Frames and Sashes, of which the following is a specication. l
This invention has for its object to provide improved means to enable the upper and lower sashes of a window frame to be displaced inwardly from the frame in orderY that they may be cleaned without danger yto the cleaner.
The invention consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification: Figure 1 represents aside elevation of a window frame and the sashes engaged therewith, looking from the inner side, a portion of the frame and a. portion of one of the sashes being shown in section; Fig 1a represents a side elevation showing parts of the frame and sashes and the removable inside stop section hereinafter referred to 'g Fig 1b represents a perspective view of said inside stop section; Fig. 2 represents a transverse vertical section of the frame, the removable stop section being removed, the movable parting bead section hereinafter described being held in a retracted position, and the sash cords temporarily engaged with coupling devices on one of the vertical stiles of the frame; Fig. 3 represents a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 represents anA edge view of the removable lower stile portion hereinafter referred to, the casing on said portion being shown in section; Fig. 5 represents a section on ,line 5 5 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5ZL represents a view similar' to Fig 5, showing a different adjustment; Fig. 6 represents a perspective view of the 'movable parting bead section hereinafter referred to; Fig. 7 represents an edge view of a portion of one of the sashes; Fig. 8 represents a section on line 8 8 of Fig. 7; Fig. 9 represents a top view of a portion of one of the sashes; Fig. 10 represents a section on line 10-10 of Fig. 9.
The same reference characters indicate the same or similar parts in all the views.
A window frame embodying my invention includes the usual top and bottom crossbars 12 and 13, vertical stiles 18 and 18a at opposite edges of the sashes la and 15, said Stiles being provided with parting beads between the two sashes, outside vertical stops 16 for the upper sash and inside vertical stops for the lower sash. One of said inside stops is composed of a single fixed strip 17, and the other of a fixed upper section 172L and a removable lower section 17h.
The section 17b has a beveled upper end face 17c fitting under a. correspondingly beveled overhanging end face on the fixed section 17, as shown by Fig. la, and a stud 17 d which enters a socket in the frame. The section 17b is removable to permit the corresponding edges of the lower sash 15 and upper sash 14, (when the latter is lowered) to swing inwardly from the frame, so that the sashes may be entirely cleaned on both sides by a person within the room, the stop section 17b being provided with a fastening device, such as a sliding catch or bolt 21 adapted to enter a socket in the lower crossbar or sill 13 to coniine said section in place. The section 17b may have a dowel pin 17e at its upper end adapted to enter the lower end of the section 17a.
VvEach upright member of the two sashes is provided with a coupling device adapted to detaohably engage an enlargement or knot ,22a `on a cord 22 provided with the usual sash weight 23. Said coupling device, which is best shown byv Figs. 7 and 8, is formed by boring an inclined hole 211 in the edge of the sash, cutting a vertical cord-receiving slot 25 in the edge of the sash above the hole 24:, and inserting in said hole a sheet metal bushing 26 having parallel ears 27 which enter the slot 25, said ears being joined to the bushing 26v by inclined shoulders 28. Vh'en the knotted end 22a of the cord 22 is inserted in a bushing 26 the inclined shoulders 28 tend to cause said knot to move inwardly until the cord 22 bears against the bottom of the slot25, the cord being thus held securely in detachable engagement with the sash. Vhen the sash is swung inwardly the cord knot 22a may be quickly removed from the bushing 26, the sash being thus completely detached.
Each of the stiles 18 and 18- is provided with similar cord-coupling devices, as indicated by Figs. 1, 2 and 3, where 24a designates the inclined holes, 26a the bushings, and 25a the vertical slots communicating with the holes 24a and receiving the ears -27n on the bushings. The coupling devices The vertical stile 18 is or may be provided with the usual parting bead extending continuously from the lower to the upper end ofthe frame. The stile 18 is provided with a parting bead, which, While extending continuously from the lower to the upper end of the frame, includes a fixed upper section 30 and a movable lower section 31, which is adapted to be pushed back or retracted into the stile to permit the corresponding edge of the upper sash 14 to be swung inwardly and removed from the casing when the upper sash is lowered. The movable parting bead section 31 is located in a vertical slot 32 formed in the lower portion of the stile 18, said lower portion being preferably a removable portion 18b tted in an opening Vformed for its reception in the fixed portion of the stile 18a and detachably held therein by screws 33 entering the fixed portion of the stile 18a and by a tenon 34 entering a mortise 35 in the lower cross-bar or sill 13. rlhe removable stile portion 18b is provided on its back with a sheet metal casing 36 forming an abutment for two bent wire springs 38 attached at 39 to the movable parting bead section 31. Said section 31 has a thickened back form ing stop shoulders 40 which bear on the rear side of the removable portion 18b and limit the projection of the bead section 31 by the springs 38. The lower end of the casing 36 is ropen and the slot 32 extends through the lower end of the removable stile portion 18h, so that the movable parting bead section 31 may be moved endwise into and out of the stile portion 18b and casing 36, as indicated by full and dotted lines in Fig. 4. The free ends of the springs 38 are movable in holes 41 formed for their reception in the back of the section 31. The stiles are provided with the usual sash cord pulleys 43.
Movable detents or buttons 45 are pivoted at 46 to plates 47, which are recessed into the stile portion 18h. Said buttons are adapted to be turned across the outer edge of the retracted parting bead section 31, as l indicated by Figs. 2 and 5a, and to hold said section retracted, so that the section 31 may be confined out of the way while the operator is displacing, cleaning, and returning the upper sash. The detents or buttons are located near opposite ends of the section 31, so that the operator may Vfirst press back and confine one end of the section and then the other end.
It will' now be seen that the lower sash may be removed by displacing the inner stop 17h, swinging the lower sash inwardly, and detaching the weight cords therefrom, the cords *being temporarily engaged with the engaging devices on the stiles while the sash is removed. It will also be seen that the upper sash may be removed by iirst lowering it until its upper end is below the upper end of the movable parting bead section 31, said section being longer than the length or height of the sash, and then pressing the section 31'inwardly until its outer edge is flush with the face of the stile, and
confining said section by the detents 45, so that the upper sash may be swung inwardly and removed like the lower sash, the cords of the upper sash being also temporarily engaged with cord-engaging devices on the frame. By making the lower portion 18b of the stile that supports the movable parting beadfsection 31 removable as described, and by making the section 31 removable from the removable portion of the stile, am enabled to conveniently obtain access to the springs 38 for the purpose of overcoming dificulty due to the breakage or loss of force of said springs.
An existing window fra-me and its sashes may be readily altered to embody my invention by cutting away the lower portion of one of the stiles to form an opening for the reception of the removable portion 18b and by lproviding the sashes and the stiles with the described cord-engaging devices.
Vhile each sash may be detached from both of its cords and entirely removed from the frame as above described, I prefer to leave each -sash connected with one of the cords so that the cord may act as a hinge or loose connection between the sash and the frame, permitting the operatorl to wash the glass while the weight of the sash is supported mainly by the frame and the attached cord. To this end I provide the upper horizontal rail of each sash with a cord engaging device adapted to engage a bight'of one of the-cords while the cord is attached vto the sash.l and engaged with the pulley 43.
Said coupling. device is preferably a hook 49 (Fig. y9) hinged at 50 to a plate 51 recessed in the upper surface of the top rail of the sash. The hook is adapted to swing upwardly, as indicated by dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 10, and is formed to engage a bight 22a of one of the cords 22, said bight being shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1. The operator may first grasp the cord at a point above the sash, pull the grasped portion inwardly to form the bight 22a, and then engage said bight vwith the hook 49.l The other cord engaged with the opposite edge portion of the sash may now be detached and secured temporarily as described, leaving said edge portion free to be swung inwardly, the lower end 0f the sash resting on the bottom cross-bar 13 of the frame, and the hook 49, cord bight 22a, and the pulley 43 engaged therewith serving as a hinge.
Having described my invention, I claim:
l. A window frame provided with an upright stile having a removable section, a spring casing attached to said removable section, a movable parting bead section carried by the removable stile section, and springs Within said casing acting to normally hold said parting bead section in operative position, said stile section, movable bead section and spring case being removable from the frame as a single unit.
2. A window frame provided with an upright stile having a removable section, a spring casing attached to said removable section, a movable parting bead section car ried by the removable stile section, springs attached to said bead section and bearing against said casing, to normally hold the bead section in operative position, said bead section and said springs being removable from said stile section and casing, said stile section, movable bead section and spring casing being removable from the frame as a single unit.
3. A window frame provided with an upright stile having a removable section, the latter being provided with a longitudinal slot, a spring casing behind said slot, having an open end, and a parting bead section movable in said slot from a projected sashguiding position to a retracted sash-releasing position, and provided with springs bearing on said casing to normally hold the bead section operatively projected, the stile section, bead section, casing, and springs being removable as a single unit, the bead section through the open end of said casing.
